DIY Painted Shower Curtain

This is a tutorial of how I took a plain fabric shower curtain and transformed it into a one of a kind masterpiece.
I started with a plain white fabric shower curtain. The fabric has diamond textured weave but that's not a problem.

Since I wanted mustaches on my shower curtain I need to find a template. After an exhausting search, I couldn't find enough different mustaches in the right sizes for what I wanted. I decided to draw them myself.

I only needed to draw half of each mustache because they are symmetrical and I would never be able to make them symmetrical drawing freehand.

After I cut out my mustache halves, I traced them onto card stock paper. I traced the cut out half and then flipped it over and lined it up in the center and traced to make the other half.

After I cut out all of the mustaches on card stock paper, I traced them all onto the paper side of contact paper. I left plenty of extra contact paper around each mustache to protect the fabric from paint.

I cut out the mustaches, leaving the contact paper in tact forming my stencil.
I spread a plastic drop cloth across the floor under the shower curtain to make sure no paint would bleed through onto the floor. I was planning to use painters tape to tape off a grid so I could easily align all of my mustaches but luckily the shower curtain had creases from being in the package that made the perfect grid.

I peeled the paper off of the contact paper and put my stencil on the shower curtain sticky side down.
I used a foam brush and dabbed (pounced) the paint all over the stencil until the mustache was completely covered. I used a paper plate to hold my paint and to give me a place to dab the excess paint off the sponge brush.

I was able to reuse each stencil for the entire project. After each use I peeled the stencil off immediately and set them aside for about half hour to let the paint on the contact paper dry enough so that I wouldn't get it all over my hands or the shower curtain while trying to lay out the next row.

I used a latex interior paint because if you have ever gotten paint on your clothes, you know it wont come out in the wash.
